When an artist early on is as talented as Yan Sun, it becomes difficult to find words to describe his new work that have not already been used. The earlier works were rock solid and technically done with great expertise especially in the trompe – l’oeil renderings. The newer works are fascinating with changes in style and coloration. The colors in the Native American paintings are soft and less defined and portray the subjects as well if not better than the Native American artists themselves. Strong brush strokes characterize his boating scenes, there is a tip of the hat to impressionism here and there, the portraits and the architecturally related subjects exhibit his usual competent draftsmanship, and there is a deft handling of the pastel colors of the small delicate oil florals. These are warm and welcoming works. In the foreword for the previous book and exhibition, I stated that Yan Sun would continue to build on his already significant maturity and continue to produce masterful works of art without question. It is very gratifying to find that this statement was more than justified.
