The life for the coal miners was simple and hard; the faces and hands of them were dark and coarse; and their bodies were worn-out. However, the artist had found in them a simplicity that moved him, a modesty that influenced him, a forthright spirit that affected him, and a strong will that touched him. It was a beauty that was in the character of people he saw everyday.
