This trompe l'oeil painting by Yan Sun is inspired by a great master in art history. In this painting, Yan Sun has represented a segment from “Madonna and Child with Two Angels” by Italian Renaissance artist Filippo Lippi (1406-ca. 1469), from the collection of The Uffizi. With Madonna holding her hands in prayer, Yan Sun gives the most important visual emphasis to this segment.

The contrast of light and shadow in this painting is incredible. The artist used a variety of objects to attain a meditative feel.

Yan Sun’s paintings are a combination of extreme abstract concepts and extreme realist images. His “wonderfully skillful paintings conflate post-pop appropriation with the late nineteenth century school of trompe l’oeil painting.” ~ Gordon McConnell
